Time is just flying by, and before you know it, March will be here—and with it, the California Dreamin’ writers conference on March 27-29.
In addition to pitch appointments, we are also offering the opportunity to participate in a critique group led by one of these industry professionals, where the editor or agent will read ten pages of your work and deliver feedback in a group setting. There will be no more than five authors in each group, and the cost is $25.
Signups for this will be closing soon, so if $25 sounds like a good deal for invaluable feedback from your dream editor or agent, you should register for it now! To sign up, just go to the pitch appointment page you were emailed after you registered and fill out the critique section. Then send your payment via PayPal or mail a check. (If you haven’t registered yet, this section will be at the bottom of the registration form.)
In addition to my conference committee duties, I will also be presenting a couple of workshops. I will be sitting on a Historical Romance panel with fellow authors Kate McKinley and Janet Tronstad. Bring your questions about writing historical romance, and we’ll be happy to answer them!
I will also be doing a workshop called Unknot Your Plot. I conceived this one after years of being a pantser who always gets stuck on chapter five. Every single book, I hit chapter five like a brick wall, screeching to a halt. When this happens, I turn to structural devices to help me unknot the tangle and get moving again.
I’ll be talking about how to use tools like storyboards, the list of twenty questions, the hero’s journey, index cards for every scene, and other tricks of the trade that have helped me see the whole plot (forest) through the scenes (trees) for sixteen books now. I’ve found it very helpful throughout the years, and I hope you will, too.
See you at the conference!
